The Broome County Local History and Genealogy Center is located on the second floor of the Broome County Public Library. The Center incorporates the local history and genealogy holdings of the Broome County Public Library, the Broome County Historical Society, the Broome County Historian and the City of Binghamton Historian.

Books

We have over 5,000 books covering a wide variety of topics. Among the selections are state histories from Pennsylvania through New England, genealogical materials such as how-to books, family histories, biographies, oral histories, histories of local towns and villages, city directories, and yearbooks. The Broome County Historical Society also has numerous publications available for purchase. Click on the word "Books" to see the books, a brief description and prices.
Children

Census

Area census records, from 1790 to 1930, are available on microfilm for a multi-county area around Broome and northern Pennsylvania. The 1880 census for the United States on CD-ROM can be used on the Local History and Genealogy Center's computers. Click on the word "Census" to view a list of the holdings the center owns.

Street

Manuscripts

More than 4,000 archival items, from the mid-1700s to the present, have been collected and are available for use in research. These items include business ledgers, diaries, personal letters, war memorabilia, orphanage records, funeral records, weather records, and more.

Maps

Original maps dating from the late 1700s to the present, show the vast changes in the area's land and population. Click on the word "Maps" to see lithographs and other items sold by the Broome County Historical Society.
Soldiers

Military

World War I to Korean Conflict veterans database, includes dates of newspaper articles for a majority of the veterans; Vietnam War-Iraq War deceased veterans database, includes service and date of death; photocopies of obituaries for veterans WWI to the Iraq War. Bingos

Name Index

The index, also known as the Woodward File, contains over 225,000 cards with abstracted information from local records dating from 1790 to approximately 1895. Some of the information found on the cards includes census records, cemetery records, church records, newspaper accounts, daybooks and accounts books.
Funeral

Obituaries

Obituaries taken from the local papers are on file dating from about 1960 to 1975 and from 1981 to the present. The collection now contains over 150,000 local obituaries. Anything before those dates can usually be found on the microfilm in the local papers.

Photographs

Well over 75,000 images from around Broome County have been indexed and can be copied for use by researchers. Photographs, slides, glass-plate negatives, stereo views, and film, dating from the 1850s to the present, may be used to document the past. All black and white photographs seen on this webpage are available for purchase. If you are looking for a specific picture or would like to know what is available, please e-mail, phone or write us. Click on the word "Photographs" to view a price list. Note: All pictures must be purchased from the Broome County Historical Society, not the Broome County Public Library.

Vertical Files

The Center houses over 50,000 clippings on topics of local interest. The 6,000 files cover a wide range of topics including women's history, immigration, business histories, local personalities, cemeteries, religious histories, local organizations, crime, military records, municipalities, and family histories.

Four computers provide access to the internet for researchers. The Broome County Public Library subscribes to Ancestry Plus. In order to use the internet you must have a SmartCard, available to qualified patrons at the Circulation Desk on the first floor of the library.
