The Friends
of the Broome County Public Library
The Friends is an organization building a new partnership between the library and the community by contributing services that enhance community access for all people.
Our Purpose
- To maintain an association of persons interested in books and libraries
- To promote an informed interest in the Broome County Public Library, its services, facilities, and needs.
- To receive, administer, and dispose of gifts for the promotion of the objectives of the Broome County Public Library.
Our Fundraising Projects
Our fundraising projects help to support special library activities. In 2011, the Friends provided over $20,000 in support for special programs and items not covered by the library's regular budget. Even during the difficult economic climate in Broome County, the Friends have been able to provide funding for costly items such as solar panels, furniture, computers, and a scooter for use by handicapped and elderly patrons. All proceeds from our book sales and sales in the gift shop support the library.
Some of the projects funded recently by the Friends include
| Children's Summer Reading Program | $4,228 | |
| Reference Books | $2,350 | |
| Computers | $8,322 | |
| Nook WiFi | $ 140 | |
| Wii, Accessories, Games | $ 796 | |
| Tables | $1,141 | |
| Books & Babies | $3,000 | |
| Promotions and Promotional Materials | $1.068 | |
| Furniture | $3,153 |
In addition to these projects, the Friends' Board has committed $14,000 to replace the audio visual system in the Decker Room. They have allocated $900 to purchase a scooter, $10,020 to purchase an additional 12 computers for public use, and $3,500 for furniture for Youth Services.
